strumento musicaleSurnay’s orgins can be traced to the Zurna, an ancient woodwind instrument from Ancient Egypt, later spread throughout the whole Central Asia, in China and Eastern Europe. Considerd by many the forerunner of the European shawm, the surnay is an oboe with double reed and the top larger than the bottom. Its name it is composed by the words “sur” (feast) and “nay”(reed, flute), suggesting that it was employed during this kind of events. Its body is made of apricot and mulberry wood, while the metallic entrance is often made of silver. Its lenght is about 60-70 cm and it has 7 holes and several ventilation slots.
