The Sasandar Dancers

Bukhara style is generally considered as the most distinguished among Central Asian traditional dance styles. It derives its origins from the court dances traditionally performed by the so called sasandar the elected professional dancers of the Emire’s court. The sasandar dancers wear precious gold embroidered dresses and accompany their dancing steps by the sound of silver bracelets. Their movements are well sincronized so that geometrical figures, like circles and stars, can be performed by the group. Part of the performance requires a very charachteristic posture: dancers move sitting on their knees. Hands’movements and eyes expressions have symbolic meanings and preserve the feature of very ancient Asian dances, coming from Northern India.
